Jeremiah Brent

Next on our list of modern interior designers is Jeremiah Brent. With no formal training, it was his natural artistic instinct and hobby for deconstructing furniture that gave him the skills to start his eponymous interior design firm. Taking on the position of assistant to A-list stylist Rachel Zoe in 2011 gave him an invaluable insight into running a luxury business and working with VIPs. From here the modern interior designer went on to build his own little black book of high-profile clients – Rachel Zoe herself and celebrity colourist Rita Hazan have commissioned Jeremiah to decorate their homes. While his firm specialises in diverse projects, from luxurious penthouses to super-chic nightclubs, his entire portfolio is unified by a steadfast exhibition of fresh contemporary interior design. It’s Brent’s mantra – “Interior design, like fashion, is art we live our lives in” – that keeps his work consistently desirable. The incorporation of the beauty and style of high fashion results in sharp, sleek interiors characterised by clean colours, gorgeous materials and subtle vintage accents.

Contemporary Home Decor Style

Contemporary design style is often confused with modern design style… usually references to modern are in fact contemporary design.

Contemporary design is current design which includes open spaces, plenty of light, straight lines, plenty of glass, settel and wood and in some cases unusual layouts.

Elements of contemporary  design:

  • Open spaces or open floor plans,
  • Unusual layouts,
  • Use of natural light,
  • Neutral colors,
  • Metal accent pieces,
  • Textured and natural fabric,
  • Very light or very dark wood tones, and
  • Lighting design used as an artistic statement.

Contemporary designers create designs that are more fluid, in the sense that they are according to the current, trending styles; however, they don’t resort to a particular style or design. These designers also have a great sense of what’s currently in style so their designs are constantly evolving and carry a very modern touch to them.

In today’s time, contemporary interior designs include unadorned spaces that appear to be super clean and classic, along with furniture that is exposed from its legs to create more space. As stylish and modern contemporary designs may be, they are yet super elegant with intricate details kept to a minimum.

Marmol Radziner

They may be architects first and foremost but Marmol Radziner know more than a thing or two about modern interior design – and landscape, furniture and jewellery design for that matter. The full service firm, founded in 1989 by Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, has created award-winning modern interior design masterpieces in New Zealand, Arizona and California to name just a few places. With its residential projects, it aims to “design homes to absorb stories of a hundred years” focusing on the relationship between the client and the space to create a perfectly tailored environment. Materials that age well, such as concrete, wood and natural stone, are a resolute favourite with the firm as is creating fluidity between indoor and outdoor design. It also uses each project site to influence design decisions so that spaces become elegantly rooted in their surroundings.

Windsor Smith

Windsor Smith creates beautifully layered rooms that have caught the attention of influencers in the entertainment and business worlds.

The Santa Monica-based interior and product designer redefines the home for modern day living, creating spaces that echo the individual personality of its inhabitants whilst catering for the demands of 21st-century lifestyles.

Her interiors are never short on elegance, and they balance both classic and modern elements. Demonstrating her signature look, this grand space marries traditional parquet wood flooring and charming wall panelling with what Smith likes to call ‘style wildcards’ – those power pieces that promise to get noticed.

Whether it’s a zebra hide rug or a luminous cello, these are the additions that give Windsor’s interiors unmissable impact.

Vintage

=> Read our epic vintage decor style guide here.

Like minimalism, vintage isn’t an established interior design style, but it’s also a look that people want so we include it in our list.

While they come off as old-fashioned, vintage interior designers have a great aptitude for versatility, creativity, and imagination. They create absolute primarypieces that always tell a story and seem to have a rich history.

Vintage interior styling focuses on minimal clutter and puts forth a very clean, crisp, and classy display of furniture, decorative accents, and designs. These interiors also often include old frames and photographs that are usually black and white in order to give the entire space a very old yet stylish look. You may also see a variety of open shelves in most vintage designs that allow one to show off their classic vintage accessories and items.

Hare + Klein

Down under is represented in our list of the top 10 modern interior designers by Hare + Klein. The Australian-based firm, headed by Meryl Hare, have enjoyed an impressive 27-year lifespan to date and are still going strong. What’s the secret to its success? Creating modern interior design without a sell-by date. Sleek surfaces and subtle colourways give its projects a timeless quality and no matter how big or small a room is, each space the firm touches feels stylishly spacious and brought to life with just the right amount of luxe accessories. The multi-award winning practice doesn’t just curate modern-looking spaces but tackles its projects with a modern mindset, carefully considering the sustainability of materials. In this image from one of its residential triumphs, the firm’s talent for showing off contemporary art to its utmost potential is immediately evident.

Christian Liaigre

The second French interior designer in our round up is Christian Liaigre, who really needs no introduction. His work is such the epitome of refined modernism that we can’t resist talking about it.

The French interior and furniture designer achieves minimalist French elegance with the use of sumptuous silk, linen, leather and wood. He also likes to ‘feng shui’ his projects, balancing calm colour palettes and relatively unadorned furniture harmoniously to create a serene atmosphere.

Liaigre’s projects include working on The Mercer Hotel in New York, Selfridges in London and offices for Valentino Couture in Paris. With names such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs also charting his client list, he’s undoubtedly one of the greats.

David Hicks

Now to interior designers in Melbourne, starting with David Hicks. Having established his design studio in 2001, over the last decade or so he has worked hard to become one of Australia’s leaders in interior and building design within the luxury sector.

He is also featured in the LuxDeco 100 Often referred to as being a revolutionary in modern design, he favours strong, simple lines in his work (and is no stranger to high-gloss, dramatic finishes) resulting in a clean and contemporary aesthetic.

His interiors feel well-rounded and harmonious, never cold nor bare. In recent years, he also authored his first book, Intimate – A Private World of Interiors.

Joseph Dirand

Joseph Dirand is living proof that timeless elegance comes naturally to the French.

The French interior designer/architect has a penchant for minimalism, cool monochrome colour palettes and clean-lined furniture.

Thanks to his creative eye, Dirand has been taken under the wing of the fashion industry and commissioned to design several high-end stores including Balenciaga in Tokyo, Pucci in New York and Balmain in Paris.

With his meticulous attention to light and proportions, he’s also a firm favourite with luxurious hotels and restaurants.

Alexander & Co.

A top Australian interior designer, Jeremy Bull and his studio, Alexander & Co. are known for their interest in diverse, multifaceted projects.

He sees design briefs as a very general term that need not necessarily relate to something as large as interior design plans. Instead, he prefers to embrace both big thinking and small, specialists projects be it the creation of a light fixture, a chair or a whole home or retail space renovation.

This is why they choose to refer to themselves not purely as interior designers, but as furniture makers and space creators also.

The studio’s signature style is one that always reflects hand-made, authentic craftsmanship. Bull prides himself on representing individual artisans in all of his projects.

Chahan Minassian

After studying interior designer in Paris and gaining experience in his role as European creative director for Ralph Lauren, Minassian started up on his own agency in 1993 and soon skyrocketed to an internationally renowned name.

Space is a primary concern for this French interior designer who redesigns homes to assist the flow of movement. Minassian’s work can also be identified by the use of sophisticated fabrics and muted colours.

His affinity for exotic materials (python and tortoiseshell have made appearances in his work) as well as ancient, such as stone and bronze, has attracted a portfolio of projects consisting of super-yachts, Parisian hotels, country homes in Quebec and stores in London and Tokyo.

What is most admirable about Minassian is that he advocates the work of other furniture designers and artists in his own gallery space where his interior design clients can select unique pieces for their home.

Kelly Wearstler

The moment a designer’s work becomes instantly recognisable with one quick glance, it’s a definite sign they’ve conquered the industry. Kelly Wearstler cracked that feat years ago, after establishing her eponymous studio which has grown from boutique interior design firm to global lifestyle brand.

This colour-charged living room, taken from one of the creative’s Beverly Hills projects, is a sample of what Wearstler has to offer.

With fearless shapes and confident colour schemes meeting graphic art, vintage lighting and a dose of Surrealism, it’s simple to see why her super-creative projects have earned her an A-list clientele from the film and music industries.

She’s the queen of Maximalism, obsessed by dramatically oversized silhouettes that mean her work always packs a punch.

Deborah Oppenheimer

First on our list of top modern interior designers is Deborah Oppenheimer. Serenity is the overriding feeling at the sight of her exceptional modern interior designs. The South African designer mastered the art of understanding materials and communicating mood through visual means during her early career in art direction and fashion design. After adding Zurich and Switzerland to the list of countries she’s lived in, Oppenheimer launched her interior design business in Hong Kong in 1993. To this date she hasn’t stopped travelling, putting her creative spin on global locations, from New York to Phuket, where she fuses striking lighting solutions, elegant soft designer home accessories and understated luxury furniture. It’s Oppenheimer’s affinity for open space, symmetry and light and dark that gives her work a thoroughly modern interior design appeal. While residential spaces are her forte, the designer has also branched out into commercial commissions, designing a luxury retail space in Hong Kong’s impressive International Finance Centre (IFC).

Bohemian

Bohemian interior designers are known for their use of those interior pieces that seem to possess nomadic and ethnic vibes. They also love playing with vibrant colors and rich patterns that appear to be bold and loud.

An interesting yet key characteristic of these designers is that they purposefully make things look messy so you will often find them mixing around different colors and a variety of elements like pillows, throws, rugs, etc.

The Bohemian-style interior is also a true representation of the avant-garde lifestyle that is known for its adventurous and carefree spirit. So, these designers also try to display these features in their styles and designs.

Some trending modern bohemian designs include those inspired from southwestern, Moroccan and tribal styles that may typically consist of animal hides, metallic accents and wood.

Barbara Barry

The matriarch of American interior design, Barbara Barry has been an unwavering influence in the industry since forming her studio in Los Angeles in 1985.

Raised in a family of painters, Barry’s eye for subtle nuances in colours and natural forms was honed from an early age. Throughout out her career, nature has remained the designer’s ultimate source of inspiration, demonstrated here in this fresh interior awash with a meadow-inspired palette of gentle green and buttercup yellow hues.

Aside from being the brains behind an extensive portfolio of residential and commercial projects, the creative is also a product designer and has collaborated with top industry’s names, including Visual Comfort and Global Views.

Whether it’s a chandelier or Californian home, Barry’s concepts are resolutely elegant; rooted by classic silhouettes, raised by alluring accents and pops of colour.

Marcel Wanders

Last but most definitely not least, we finish our list of the top modern interior designers with Marcel wanders. After opening the doors to his studio in 1995, Marcel Wanders rose to international acclaim the following year for his iconic Knotted Chair design and now the Dutch-born creative is the leader of a powerhouse of around 50 international design specialists and co-founder of successful design label Moooi. While innovative materials, techniques and pops of bold colours are constants in his design vocabulary, his work also makes references to historical styles with flamboyant details, ornate patterns and overstated sculptural features. His avant-garde vision has attracted collaborations with esteemed brands such as Swarovski, Puma and MAC, and commissions to design the world’s most luxurious hotels. Oversized bells encasing chandeliers, extravagant seating solutions and stunning wall panelling are just a few of the many unpredictable, but brilliant, features that pack his projects with his magnetic personality.

Decoration

Nounedit

decoration ( and , plural )

  1. The act of adorning, embellishing, or honoring; ornamentation.
  2. That which adorns, enriches, or beautifies; something added by way of embellishment; ornament.
    • 1918, W. B. Maxwell, chapter 12, in :

There were many wooden chairs for the bulk of his visitors, and two wicker armchairs with red cloth cushions for superior people. From the packing-cases had emerged some Indian clubs, , and all these articles  made a scattered and untidy decoration that Mrs. Clough assiduously dusted and greatly cherished.
    • 1994, Stephen Fry, chapter 2, in The Hippopotamus:

At the very moment he cried out, David realised that what he had run into was only the Christmas tree. Disgusted with himself at such cowardice, he spat a needle from his mouth, stepped back from the tree and listened. There were no sounds of any movement upstairs: no shouts, no sleepy grumbles, only a gentle tinkle from the decorations as the tree had recovered from the collision.
  3. Specifically, any mark of honor to be worn upon the person, as a medal, cross, or ribbon of an order of knighthood, bestowed for services in war, great achievements in literature, art, etc.
  4. (biochemistry, immunology) The use of exotic sugars as decoys to distract the immune system of a host

Steven Gambrel

Steven Gambrel’s eponymous interior design firm stands apart for its sensitive attention to architectural details of properties and their surrounding geography.

The studio was founded in 1996 (just three years after Gambrel graduated) and specialises in residential and commercial projects. Beautiful proportions and carefully curated vintage, antique and custom-designed furniture pieces are constants in Gambrel’s work, which is driven by a passion for creating timeless, comfortable interiors that grow old gracefully.

This neutral lounge – found inside a contemporary New York beach house – is filled with a conscious mix of distinctive materials and unique accents to contrast the property’s large glass walls and understated architectural elements. Dark woods, exquisite surfaces and interesting instances of print add character to the room’s modern foundation.

Jacques Garcia

The final addition to our list of top French Interior Designers is Jaques Garcia. According to Jacques Garcia “luxury is the simplest thing in the world: It is knowledge”.

If this is the case, then this luxury-inclined designer has all the knowledge in the world. Garcia takes a well-deserved place in our French interior designer hall of fame for his ability to tell stories with spaces filled with elegance and rare objects.

He’s a popular choice with affluent Francophiles across the world due to his masterful skills with colour and flamboyant materials, including velvets and damasks.

Garcia’s career reached stellar heights when renovating the decorative art galleries at the Louvre and the rooms at the Palace of Versailles, and unsurprisingly it’s still going strong today.
